So long Substack
Thanks for all the fish
Hello! Remember me?
I’m back again with a quick announcement.
You may not have noticed, but my magazine industry newsletter has been on hiatus since summer last year. The pause was partly because I’ve been prioritising paid work but, also, the idea of SubStack monetising real-world Nazis, misogynistic a**holes and prediction-market sociopaths sucked the joy out of the whole endeavour. Basically.
So, long story short, I’m leaving this place and going over to Beehiiv.
I might write more about why I’m moving at some point in the future. But for now, I’m just happy not to have Substack’s general enshitiffication itching my brain and to focus on creating a newsletter that helps people make print magazines work in this messed up digital-media landscape.
That’s it for now. This email is just a heads up and you don’t need to do a thing - Beehiiv will import all my subscribers and newsletter archives ready for me to get going again at the beginning of September.
If you’re a SubStack purist and don’t want to receive emails from me on Beehiiv, just hit unsubscribe, no hard feelings. You have a whole month to decide.
If you’re staying with the Magazine Diaries (PLEASE STAY!) I’ll be sending from Beehiiv soon.

'paid work' rings a bell but I can't for the life of me think why!
