How magazine publishers can make the most of video
Plus, a chance to find out more about video podcasting at the Publisher Summit
Hello Magazine Makers,
It’s been a busy few weeks finishing up ‘Inside the Print Revival’ in time for the Publisher Print Summit. But it’s gone to the printers and if you’re at any of our Summit sessions in London next week you’ll get your very own copy.
If not, it will be available to download for free and there will be much more on what I learned researching and writing it in the Magazine Diaries over the coming weeks.

Before production on the ‘Inside the Print Revival’ report took over my life, I had a conversation with video producer Simon Elliot about how magazine makers can make the most of video without breaking the bank and even make some money.
We talked about how to…
come back from the dreaded pivot-to-video fail
make video that’s good enough across platforms
overcome common challenges, from cost to confidence
leverage common magazine publishing skills into video
make money from sponsorship or marketing services
Simon’s key message? You need to create a machine for making video just like the machine you have for making magazines. That could mean building a small internal team or outsourcing to experienced freelancers, but the key to success is consistency.
Make cost effective video podcasts
On June 11th, the second day of Media Voices’ Publishers Summit, Simon will be running a one-hour workshop on how to make cost effective video podcasts. He’s offering tips, ideas and lots of actionable advice on how you can start a video podcast or take your existing show to video.
Simon will also be running a pop-up studio through the day where you can get a feel for being on camera and build your confidence. He’ll even make you a promo for free.
Find out more about Simon’s workshop and the rest of the agenda at the Publisher Summit website. Use the code MAGAZINEDIARIES to get 50% off your ticket at checkout.
Magazine Video Songs
Here’s ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ from The Buggles… and don’t worry, it doesn’t have any magazine stars in its sights.
More than “you need video” you need a strategy that makes sense to you and your audience. Otherwise you’re creating noise.
